Old Cars Knowledge Base
Old cars...? I'm 16 and I want to get a 1963 Mercury Comet. They were about $3,000 on E-bay for an OK one, but all the guys in my family keep telling me that old cars like that are just for looks and that it will break down all the time. Opinions?
Why do people get suckerd into buying old cars as clasics? I can never get why people pay so much money for cars that they won't even drive. Why not get new cars worth their money and drive them down, rather than buying old cars that will end up sitting in a garage. I though cars were created by designers to be enjoyed and driven hard, not store them where the only enjoyment will be by the dust that sits on them.
In California is there still a program that buys old cars and junks them? I have a 20 year old gas guzzling car that I want to replace. Rather than sell it to someone else, for them to poillute with it, I would rather junk the car. . I understand that there was a program in California where they would buy an old car for $1,000 and junk it. The car I have would sell for about $1,500 on the open market, but I would rather sell it to some program that would pay me $1,000 and junk the car so that we do not have so many old polluting cars on our roads. Is that program still available? If so, how do I sell my car to them? How do I contact them?

Is it safe to say that the old cars that are still around today, will probably stay around? What I'm saying is, old cars (1965 and before) are rarely driven as daily drivers anymore. The people who do have them work on them/drive them as a hobby, so therefore it's unlikely that the number of them will go down, agreed? I'm 20 and I really want to buy a '52 Ford, because I think they may disappear...but they probably won't have gone anywhere by the time I'm 25 or 30...right?
Are there any old cars that are fuel efficient? When I say old, I don't mean something built a few years ago. I mean cars that were built in the 1950's or 1960's. Realizing, of course, they weren't as efficient as today's cars, and I'm pretty sure that in the 1950's there weren't any cars that got 36 miles per gallon. What I do mean is, were there any cars that got 20 miles per gallon or so? If there are any cars like that, what are they?
Do the Police Like Having Civilians Driving Around in Old Cop Cars? We have all seen ordinary people driving around in ex-police cars. I have always wondered if the police like having people driving around in their old cars. Like maybe it looks like there are way more police patrolling a town than there actually are. So do police officers like people driving around in old cops cars or could they not care less either way?
Are old mustang cars suppose to be cool? My husband is obsessed with his 87 Mustang Gt 5.0. Its old as heck, loud, and personally I think those cars are ugly. He even wants me to drive it around but Im embarrassed! Ive seen other people driving around in them and putting them in car shows and stuff. I just don't get what the big deal is! Are these old cars suppose to be head turners or something? Just, what is so special about these old mustangs?
Do fuel injection cleaning liquids work with old classic cars? because old cars don't have the modern fuel injectorn systems that today's cars have, right? They have carburetors... Will all old cars qualify for $4500 toward a new car under Cash for Clunkers? Let's say that someone is in the market for a new car with no financial difficulty? What's to stop them from buying up an old $500 rusty Chevy Cavalier and expecting a dealer to give them $4500 toward a brand-new car? Does the program really work like that? What are the qualifications for both the old car and the new car?
Is there anywhere I can find old cars that are brand new? I was wondering if it were possible to buy, for example, cars made in the 80s or 90s that for whatever reason have never been driven - they were just never sold. It probably sounds kinda silly, but I have a 1990 Toyota Corolla and love it...when it finally dies I actually would like to buy the same exact car, because I don't really like the new Corollas coming out today. Was wondering if I could get a brand new old car, so to speak. Thanks

How do they get so many old cars for movies? I was watching American Gangster, just wondering how they get so many older cars in good shape, (even some classics) to be in movies, especially in the older ones, and ones as set in the 60's and 70's? I live in Texas, where many older cars are in good shape, due to no snow, or salt, but still never see very many. Anyone know??? Please serious answers only, thatnks, and God Bless, Bob
Why isn't synthetic oil recommended on old cars? I heard a few people say it's no good for old cars because its a thin oil, older cars need thicker oil to fill the void of the worn parts or something of that sort. Synthetic oil I know don't have wax unlike conventional oil. The wax is what causes it to thicken up in cold temps, so it maybe true..??

Why do the new cars break down more often than they did back in the old days? Why is it that the new cars break down more often than they did back in the old days? Hearing about the reliability of the new cars makes me afraid of even buying a new car, I personally would rather buy an older car with low miles than I would buying a new car anyday cause the reliability seems to hold up better.

Are old muscle cars supposed to sound like that? Every time I see an old Charger or Challenger or Mustang, etc, the (presumably souped-up) engines always sound like sputtering motorboats. They seem barely able to idle without stalling and if I happen upon a guy just starting it up he immediately starts revving it to keep it going. Now mind, this is the result of MANY years of observation, not just some guy I saw once. I always assumed these cars have been hot-rodded and modified and that's the cause but why do they so often sound like out-of-tune motorcycles afterward?
How to legally install seatbelts in old cars? I'm looking at buying an old (not much money) camper-van for three friends and myself. The only problem is that most of them only have two seat-belts (for the front seats). Am I legally allowed to install seat-belts on the rear bench or do I have to take it to a mechanic or something? By the way, I'm in Canada.
How did starter pedals work on old cars? I have been reading books from the 1940's and they mention starter pedals in cars. How did the starter pedal work? How were car keys used in conjunction with the pedal (or button in some cases.) When did most American car makers stop manufacturing cars with starter pedals and switch to the ignition key (I imagine mid to late 50's)?
Do you enjoy those car shows where everyone just stands around and looks at old cars? I find them boring. Why would anyone want to drive in all that traffic and stand around and look at cars that one would see everyday in California. (There is a Woodward dream Cruise in the Detroit /Royal Oak area) People can't drive to shop, Go to movies, Hard to Breath due to exhaust, Can't find a place to park, Plus the Police are mean as can be to people. Why do people do this?
Do you think the UK government is wrong to offer incentives for scrapping old cars? I'm not sure if this has gone through or not. I've just bought a classic car and it makes me sad to think people will scrap perfectly good cars because of a government cash incentive. They say this is to promote new, greener, more energy efficient vehicles. Have they not considered the environmental damage caused by manufacturing new vehicles? Not to mention encouraging people to spend more than they can afford on a new car. I'm most concerned that we'll be losing the classics of the future.
I have a lot of experience in the automotive industry if it is good to buy old crappy cars and fix profit? I have a lot of experience in the automotive industry (basicly fully fixing and customizing with a little help) and was thinking to start buying old rusty (maybe classic) cars for like $500-$6000 and put like $15000 into it and fully fix it up what do you think the profit will be? I have alot of people who are coming in and asking if i do that and was asking if that would be good to start $1000 to $15000 depending on the custumer and the car
Where can I find the worth of old cars? I need the potential buy/sell price of a used 73' Firebird. Kelley Blue Book does not offer anything older than 86'. If you are a car expert and can tell me the price yourself, please e-mail me at freT_guy89@yahoo.com for detailed specs for you to work with.
Do you laugh when you see people with beat up old cars with McCain bumper stickers? I can understand someone with a BMW having a McCain bumper stickers, being that they actually would be making over 250K a year and as a result have might have their taxes raised a little bit. However, don't you get a kick out of those people who drive beat up old early 90s Toyota Corollas with 19 McCain stickers? Because they never will even get close to making 250k and Obama's policies would actually benefit them economically.
BIodiesel for old cars and machinery? Is Biodiesel sufficient for old cars and older machinery that run on diesel? I know that I should not just switch to B100, but is B20 fine? Or, should I go lower, to B10, or even B5?
What do you think of people with old cars? I was just wondering since I am going to buy a thirty year old car because I can not afford anything else right now (I am seven-teen)! The car is gray, but the pain isn't that bad. Are people going to make fun of me? I do not want to feel embarrass since my mother is not as rich as other people and is unable to provide for me a nice car.
