Can I use an old front wheel drive cars axle as a trailer axle?

I have a small utility trailer with a broken rear axle. I'm thinking of trying to find an old straight car axle from the scrap yard to replace it with. Is this possible?

1. Yes you can use this combination. It is best if you open the axle case and remove the ring gear so there isn't extra drag on the axle causing a loss of fuel mileage. Farmers have been doing this for years around here.
