Is it possible to push start a car with an automatic transmission like in the old classic cars ?

In the old days if you were able to get a car with an automatic transmission rolling upto 6 or 8 miles it would start. Could this be possile in todays cars ??

  1. yes the old cars could be push are pull, an be started, but they change the tran, in the newer car,
  2. no because you have to put the car in neutral to do it and modern cars have a lock on there that stops the car from moving preventing it from being stolen.
  3. Absolutely not.
  4. A great many of the "old classic cars" had an automatic transmission with a front oil pump driven off the engine and a rear pump driven off the output shaft. It was this rear pump that that was spun up by the drive shaft which provided the hydraulic pressure to engage the clutches and turn the engine over when the vehicle was pushed over approximately 25 MPH. (Which was often used to jump start a vehicle with a dead battery or bad starter) The rear pumps are not present in newer vehicles and the transmission will not engage if the engine isn't running - hence, they will not push start.
